  • 3 ripe pears, peeled, cored, and sliced
  • ½ cup butter, melted
  • ½ cup brown sugar
  • 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon ground cloves
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ½ cup molasses
  • ½ cup hot water
  • ½ cup granulated sugar
  • 1 large egg

Instructions 

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch round cake pan.
  2. Arrange pear slices in the bottom of the pan.
  3. Pour melted butter over pears and sprinkle with brown sugar.
  4. In a bowl, mix flour, baking soda, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, and salt.
  5. In another bowl, combine molasses, hot water, granulated sugar, and egg.
  6. Gradually add dry ingredients to wet ingredients, mixing until smooth.
  7. Pour batter over pears in the pan.
  8. Bake for 45 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
  9. Let cool for 10 minutes, then invert onto a plate.
