Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a loaf pan.
In a bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, salt, ginger, cinnamon, cloves, and nutmeg.
In another bowl, cream together butter and brown sugar until light and fluffy. Add molasses and egg, and mix well.
Gradually add dry ingredients to wet ingredients, alternating with hot water. Mix until just combined.
Pour batter into prepared loaf pan.
Bake for 50 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
Let the loaf cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then transfer to a wire rack to cool completely.
