Ingredients 

Dough

  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 packet active dry yeast
  • 1 ½ cups warm water
  • 1 tablespoon sugar
  • 2 teaspoon salt
  • ¼ cup baking soda for boiling
  • 1 large egg beaten, for egg wash
  • to taste coarse salt for topping

Instructions 

  1. 1. In a large mixing bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and yeast. Let it sit for 5 minutes until foamy.
  2. 2. Add flour and salt to the yeast mixture. Mix until a dough forms.
  3. 3. Knead the dough on a floured surface for about 10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
  4. 4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover, and let it rise for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
  5. 5. Preheat the oven to 425°F (220°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
  6. 6. Divide the dough into 8 equal pieces. Shape each piece into a ball.
  7. 7. In a large pot, bring 8 cups of water and the baking soda to a boil. Boil each dough ball for 30 seconds on each side.
  8. 8. Place the boiled dough balls on the prepared baking sheet. Brush with beaten egg and sprinkle with coarse salt.
  9. 9. Bake for 15-20 minutes, or until the pretzel bread is deep golden brown.
  10. 10. Let cool on a wire rack before serving.
