Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
In a medium bowl, whisk together flour, baking soda, cinnamon, ginger, cloves, and salt. Set aside.
In a large bowl, beat together butter and 1 cup sugar until light and fluffy. Beat in egg and molasses until well combined.
Gradually add dry ingredients to wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.
Roll dough into 1-inch balls, then roll in remaining sugar. Place on prepared baking sheet, spacing 2 inches apart.
Bake for 8-10 minutes, until cookies are set and tops are cracked. Cool on baking sheet for 5 minutes, then transfer to wire racks to cool completely.
