Ingredients 

Cake Ingredients

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1.5 teaspoon baking powder
  • 0.5 teaspoon salt
  • 0.5 cup unsalted butter softened
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs room temperature
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 0.5 cup whole milk room temperature

Topping Ingredients

  • 0.5 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup brown sugar packed
  • 3 large apples peeled, cored, and sliced

Instructions 

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9-inch round cake pan.
  2. In a small saucepan, melt 0.5 cup of butter over medium heat. Stir in the brown sugar until dissolved. Pour this mixture into the prepared cake pan and arrange the apple slices on top.
  3. In a mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  4. In another bowl, beat the softened butter and granulated sugar until light and fluffy. Add the eggs one at a time, beating well after each addition. Stir in the vanilla extract.
  5. Gradually add the flour mixture to the butter mixture, alternating with the milk, beginning and ending with the flour mixture. Mix until just combined.
  6. Pour the batter over the apples in the cake pan, spreading it evenly.
  7. Bake for 45 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Let the cake cool in the pan for 10 minutes, then invert it onto a serving plate.
