As summer faded away I’ve been looking forward to the bounty of shows returning to my Tivo. I’ve grown addicted to Modern Family and Glee in particular. At the beginning of last season, I also started watching The New Adventures of Old Christine and discovered it’s hilarious.
Sadly, all good things must come to an end. It happened the other night when I noticed there weren’t any upcoming recordings for Christine. My heart sank. I ran a few Google searches and discovered what I had feared. Another great show canceled.
It seems the show had been performing just ‘ok’ for some time. It was rumored that ABC had intentions to pick up the show if CBS were to cancel it. When CBS dropped the ax this year, apparently ABC had a change of heart and didn’t pick it up.
Christine Campbell has had her last neurotic adventure and it’s unfortunate that the show wasn’t allowed an extra season or episode in which to bring it to a proper end. The cast included Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Clark Gregg, Hamish Linklater, Trevor Gagnon, Wanda Sykes, Emily Rutherford (my fave), Tricia O’Kelley, and Alex Capp Horner.
During its debut season in 2006, Julia Louis-Dreyfus won an Emmy for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series. The show continued to perform moderately well over the years receiving many awards and was most recently nominated for two awards at the 2010 Emmy awards.
For Christine lovers, there are a few options. Seasons one to three of The New Adventures of Old Christine are available at Amazon. The show is also in syndication on Lifetime (at least I can catch up on older episodes).
The comedy series is truly one of Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ best shows since Seinfeld and it will be missed.
